Changing fashions in the 30s and 40s: Another lively ‘show and tell’ by Elizabeth Burness

Despite experiencing the Depression, rationing and wartime, Australian women still enjoyed being fashionable. The movie industry, popular magazines and the cult of the ‘celebrity’ enabled women to keep abreast of the latest trends and even make their own version – before the mass use of polyester.

Come along for a cosy winter’s afternoon in Tuggeranong Homestead 2- 4pm Sunday 11 August, for Elizabeth’s talk and display of authentic 30s and 40s fashions and accessories

Entry fee of $20 includes a delicious Devonshire tea.  Cash payment at door required

LOOKING BACK AT HISTORY...where did The Australian War Memorial...and the ANZAC inspiration start @ Tuggeranong HomesteadWe can thank these folk for ensuring that the history of World War 1 was recorded accurately. The image shows our first official war correspondent Charles Bean and his team outside the Tuggeranong Homestead in 1922 where they wrote the history - all 12 volumes of it as it turned out. Seated left to right, Mrs Bean, C.E.W. Bean, Mrs Bazley. Standing: A.W. Bazley, William Lowther, P. Wightman and J. Balfour. Oh, to be a fly on those walls.

Welcome HOME Hornsby Akroyd Engine

The engine was designed by Herbert Akroyd Stuart and manufactured in 1896-97 by Richard Hornsby & Sons, Grantham, Lancashire, England. It was installed at the Tuggeranong Homestead by James Cunningham in about 1905-08 to serve as a water pump from the Tuggeranong Creek to the household storage tanks. It is 1 1/2 horse-power capacity traveling at 350RPMs.

Water from the high overhead tank was propelled by gravity and distributed by reticulation along a half-inch pipeline to Mrs McIntyre’s cottage, later occupied by John and Nellie Balfour and their growing family during the Bean era, 1919-1925 and to the old shearers’ quarters where Paddy Byrne and his family lived. The site of the Balfour cottage is near the 1954 shearing shed to the west of the site and the ruins of the Byrne cottage lies to the north-west within the woodland.

A Big Shout Out of THANKS to the Canberra & District Historic Engine Club who have fully restored the engine to working order and returned to Tuggeranong Homestead in March 2024.

The changing identity of Australian women after the Great War.

A fascinating talk at Tuggeranong Homestead with Elizabeth Burness and her wonderful collection of post-WW1costumes and accessories

The massive loss of young men in the war deprived many women of married life and child-rearing. However it did lead many to find a new identity in the workforce with an independent income and new interests in sport, travel and education. Elizabeth’s ‘show and tell’ includes original evening dresses of the era and the stories behind what women wore then.

An afternoon organised by MOTH (Minders of Tuggeranong Homestead)
April 7th, 2-4 pm, Tuggeranong Homestead Johnson Drive Calwell
$20 entry fee includes a delicious Devonshire tea (cash only please)
